Dubai imposes stringent restrictions on the importation of pets. The country's Veterinary Department – yes, such an entity exists in the UAE – imposes strict regulations on the transportation of our smaller brethren. The minimum age for entry is 15 weeks, and no more than 2 dogs can be brought in. Moreover, a quarantine period must be completed in advance: dogs must be vaccinated against rabies no earlier than 21 days and no later than 12 months before entry.

Not all breeds are allowed

Additionally, the UAE prohibits the importation of specific breeds of dogs. A ban is imposed on the import of 7 types of mastiffs, 3 types of bulldogs, boxers, pit bull terriers, Rottweilers, Doberman pinschers, bull terriers, and many others. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the full list before moving.

What you'll need before moving

• Veterinary passport with details on gender, age, breed, and others.

• Rabies vaccination.

• Comprehensive vaccination: against canine distemper, hepatitis, and others.

• Microchipping.

• Treatment for external and internal parasites.

Tips before the flight

Currently, only one airline transports animals in the cabin – Etihad. Pets can only be brought on board in Abu Dhabi, as only here there is a veterinary checkpoint at the airport. The weight of the animal with the carrier must not exceed 8 kg.

It's also important to fill out a form to reserve a place for your pet in the cabin at least 7 days in advance and submit documents to the airline's email at least 72 hours before the flight. Based on travelers' experiences, it's advisable to book a spot for transporting your pet 1,5-2 months in advance.
